Compound Engineering: A Framework for Continuous Improvement

What Compound Engineering Means
Compound engineering is the practice where every completed task leaves the engineering system better than it found it. When a project encounters a pitfall — say, an analysis tool returning frequencies in an unexpected unit order — the fix does not stay in that project. It gets captured into a reusable knowledge base, committed to version control, and is immediately available to every engineer and every tool on every machine.

The Five Lessons
Compound engineering rests on five operational principles. Each one was discovered through production experience, not designed in advance.
Lesson 1: Enforcement Over Instruction
Text-based rules degrade over time. We measured 4% compliance when relying on written instructions alone. Technical enforcement — automated gates, pre-commit hooks, CI checks — achieves near-100% compliance on critical quality controls.
The principle: If you can express a rule as a pass/fail check, automate it. If it must fire on every deliverable, make it a mandatory gate.
Lesson 2: Orchestrator-Worker Separation
Complex engineering tasks degrade when a single person or tool tries to plan, implement, review, and deliver in one continuous session. Context overload sets in. The original plan gets fuzzy. Work begins addressing problems that do not exist.
The solution: One role maintains the plan and delegates focused tasks. Workers execute in isolation and return results. The orchestrator verifies each result against the original specification.
Lesson 3: Compound Learning Loop
The core mechanism of the methodology. Every project writes back to the shared knowledge base:

Lesson 4: Multi-Agent Knowledge Parity

The mandate: Corrections discovered anywhere must propagate everywhere. The repository is the single source of truth. Version control is the sync mechanism.
