Upheaval buckling
Pipeline upheaval buckling and required cover — DNV-RP-F110
Ask Deckhand to check a buried line for upheaval buckling and work out the cover it needs, to DNV-RP-F110.
What you can ask it to do
- Screen a buried line for upheaval buckling from an imperfection under temperature and pressure.
- Work out the download (cover/rock) needed to restrain it.
- Report the required cover height and where rock dump is needed.

Questions
What is upheaval buckling?
A buried high-temperature line at a vertical imperfection (an overbend) can push up through its cover; the design provides enough download — soil cover or rock dump — to hold it down. DNV-RP-F110 governs it.
What does Deckhand return?
An upheaval susceptibility screen and the required cover/download to restrain the line, flagging where rock dump is needed.
